back to Workshop Program

Workshops are held on the first Saturday of every month starting at 9am. The venue rotates between Ken Gregory's residence (map and directions) and Izzy Lieberman's residence (map and directions). As usual, this is a chance for good friends and fellow microscopists to talk about our favorite subject. You are invited to bring any manner of items related to microscopy to share it with the fellowship. If you have something you would like to sell, please feel free to bring it and set it up at the sales table. All are encouraged to participate and join in the fun. The workshop will finish at about noon, at which point we will retire to lunch in the local Coco’s.

2006"Hands-On" Practical Workshops

On occasion the Society also holds "hands-on" practical workshops, typically on a quarterly basis. Details will be posted as the program is firmed up. The MSSC has an ongoing need for facilitators of these "hands-on" workshops. If you are interested in delivering a workshop please contact the Program Chair (see Contacts)

Forthcoming events:

Saturday, July 1, 2006 9:00 a.m. to noon, Ken Gregory's residence (see map). Special meeting with Professor Brian Ford.

This meeting is in place of the usual first Saturday of the month workshop, so still bring in something of interest associated with microscopy to present and discuss. The special part of the event will be a short presentation on what Professor Ford calls the "World's Worst Microscopy ." Brian Ford is very well known as both author and science historian. He has published many books on the history of the microscope including, Single Lens (1985), The Optical Microscope Manual (1973), The Revealing Lens (1973), and Images of Science (1993). After the meeting we will be meeting at Polly's for lunch.

Saturday, August 20, 2006 9:00 a.m. to noon, Santa Monica College (Science building), room 134.
Enter on Pico Blvd, just west of 20th Street, and park in Lot 1. (see map)

At this hands-on workshop Ed Tarvyd and John Moss will demonstrate how to prepare slides of various marine subjects including anemones, urchin spines, fish scales, sand from Hawaii, volcano nodules and more. Microscopes and accessories will be provided if you do not bring your own. If possible, bring a friend who is interested in this sort of workshop and future MSSC activities.

Saturday, November 18, 2006 9:00 a.m. to noon, New Roads School Quark Room (see map)

This hands-on workshop on Chemical Microscopy will be facilitated by Wayne Moorhead. Mr. Moorhead currently works for the Orange County Sheriffs Crime Laboratory and is well versed in this area of microscopy. Topics we include (depending on the time allowed): Determining optical properties of materials - refractive index values; Recrystallization from a solvent; Microcrystal test; Fusion melt; Observation of dispersion staining.

Recommended equipment:
A polarizing light microscope or a biological microscope with polarizing filters (or an old pair of polarizing sun glasses that you don't mind liberating the lenses from).
A box of microscope slides, coverslips
Some microtools:
. Scribe tool to cut glass
. Sharpee fine or super fine tip marker to mark slides
. Flat toothpicks
. Pen/pencil to take or make notes and draw.
. Paper to write notes on

Mr. Moorhead will supply other items for the class including the refractive index liquids needed for some of the exercises.
